Job Tips and Job News - 10 Social Networking Tips for Job-Seekers

Are resumes going the way of the Commodore computer? Could be. More than one-third of hiring and employment managers say resumes could be replaced by profiles on social media/business networking sites, according to a recent survey of 500 HR execs from OfficeTeam. And three-quarters of these managers say poor online etiquette can hurt a person's career prospects. All of which lends some relevance to a new guide to proper use of these networks for professional purposes, released by Robert Half International, OfficeTeam's parent company. “Etiquette breaches – such as impulsively posting an offensive comment on Facebook or Twitter – can have serious, career-impacting consequences,” says Brett Good, senior district president of Robert Half International. Among the “tech violator” types to avoid are The Venter, who clutters up his or her profile by ranting about pretty much everything, and the Cryptic Communicator, whose profile appears to be assembled out of nothing but coded phrases and obscure acronyms.

Job Tips and Job News - 10 Jobs That Pay Beginners Well

Not all incomes are equal. A surgeon, a retail clerk and a high school teacher don't earn the same amount. Even within each occupation, salaries vary based on experience, training and location.

One expectation that many people have is that workers new to the professional world won't make much money. Consider the stereotype that new college graduates have to move back in with their parents because they can't afford to support themselves. The stereotype isn't entirely unfounded. Walk into the apartments of most 20-somethings and you'll see bare walls and furniture that was probably passed down from someone else. Tight budgets are just a part of starting your professional life.

As with all things, there are exceptions. Not every new worker is trying to earn enough to pay the bills. Some fresh-faced workers earn more than most Americans ever will.

Top 10 Reasons to Have an Online Resume

1) Cost – The cost of postage keeps rising, and multiply that cost by the number of Cover Letters and Resumes you send out – it really adds up. An email with a formal introduction, and an attached word document, PDF, or link costs nothing each time you send since it’s already included in internet fees that you wouldn’t dare go without. Plus think of how many copies you’d have to make, which adds up at Kinkos or Pro-Copy.

Job Tips and Job News - Dressing For Success For the Job Interview

Dressing For Success For the Job Interview

Posted on 29. Apr, 2010 posted by Bill in Employment News

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

Your application and resume pleased the prospective employer and he has asked you to come in for an interview. You are confident that the interview will be a success except for one concern. What do you wear? You know from experience that first impressions are of the utmost importance. First impressions start with how a person looks. I have read somewhere that a first impression takes under thirty seconds to make.

What you wear to an interview is largely based on the position, the company’s preference, and your wardrobe. Dressing formally can give the impression of being rigid and uncomfortable if it is not what you are used to wearing. Dressing too casually can give the impression of laziness and that you really do not want the job.

Job Tips and Job News - Job Search 101 - Top Ten Ways LinkedIn Can Help You Get Hired

Job Search 101 – Top Ten Ways LinkedIn Can Help You Get Hired

LinkedIn is the revolutionary networking website that has been trying hard to unite and empower all professionals since 2003. I can promise you, if you expend some effort on LinkedIn, you will get a fine return on those efforts for years to come.  Creating a complete LI profile there may seem daunting at first. But chip away at it in stages during your normal downtime, and before you know it, you are done. Fortunately, all your existing contacts can be instantly transferred to LI and you can cut and paste your resume, so it is not all that hard. After that you want to focus on making relevant connections, getting recommendations, best answer awards and enhancing your profile with attached documents like some recommendation letters, PowerPoint demonstrations, audio files or more photos. Think of it like a modern day career portfolio that just happens to be on the Internet.

As promised here are the top ten ways LI will help job hunters:
1.      The most obvious and powerful empowerment is through the new doors opened by personal networking.
2.      The advanced people search means you will always be able to proactively search out new opportunities.
3.      You will usually be able to find a specific person’s name to send introductory cover letters to.
4.      The Questions and Answers Forum allows you to have job hunting questions answered by the experts.
5.      Many job listings are exclusive to LinkedIn because higher quality candidates are being recruited there daily.
6.      Get the inside track to your next job opportunity by knowing:  ”Who is in my network at this Company?”
7.      Your profile is a powerful marketing tool and is found in the search results from Google, Yahoo and Bing.
8.      You can easily pursue employment opportunities on LI in stealth mode without your employer knowing.
9.      LI groups allow you to focus in on your profession, job hunting and those areas where you need help.
10.   Employers and Recruiters always search for candidates on LI and routinely examine LI profiles.

Job Tips and Job News - Success Stories: I Found a Job after Long-Term Unemployment

Success Stories: I Found a Job after Long-Term Unemployment

Headline after headline about corporate downsizing and businesses folding can leave you wondering: Is anybody out there actually finding a job?

Yes (though oftentimes not very quickly). Here are three real-life success stories of people who persevered through prolonged unemployment before landing a new position.

Volunteer work leads to paid position
"During unemployment, I became extremely hard on myself, questioning what was wrong with me as a job candidate that would cause my searching to be so fruitless," says Margaret White of New York City, who encountered a not-very-welcoming job market after leaving school in 2008. "I also felt enormously guilty that I was a burden on my family financially. It was stressful not knowing where my future was headed and how I was going to support myself."
